There can't be anything more dispiriting than putting together your website and then having to wait for people to just "come" to it. Waiting for your birthday when you are a kid. That is the reason that the premier element of your online world is how you manage your PPC.

With Google, you can have a campaign started and sending prospective customers to your site in less than ten minutes. It can happen that fast. It is simply amazing how quickly you can begin new things and make changes in old with Google's systems

Speed could also be a problem. "Haste makes waste" is an applicable statement here.

Running through money like it's water is real easy with PPC management - choose a keyword, put up an ad, and get a load of traffic that costs you money but none of it is likely to buy your product. Here is the question to ask that will help ensure that you don't spend money on the wrong traffic for your site. Ask yourself:

How Many People are Looking for this Product?

Finding the answer to this question will help you understand what you should expect in the way of traffic and new customers that Google can send to you, and avoid disappointments. Even if you don't get everything you are hoping for in terms of traffic, you will probably discover some traffic sources that are not as high-profile but equally profitable.

You can get a quick estimate in a matter of seconds. Overture has a helpful search-term suggestion tool at http://inventory.overture.com (or http://inven tory.uk.overture.com for the UK). Enter a handful of your main general keywords, and Overture will tell you how many searches its servers got last month for each one.

What if you had a company that was marketing anti-aging skin care products. You are just getting started and would like to get more traffic by using Google. How do you get started?

The first thing to do is to brainstorm a starter list of possible keywords. You've got plenty to work from:

skin

beauty

acne

cosmetics

makeup

cosmetic surgery

dermatology

anti-aging

wrinkles

oils

moisturizers

This is just a starting list. Here is what we find out if we go on over to the keyword selector tool at Overture and see what kind of searches they got in the last month. This is what came up:

skin 7,290

beauty 5,006

acne 1,872

cosmetics 1,862

makeup 1,796

cosmetic surgery 1,736

dermatology 622

anti-aging 503

wrinkles 485

oils 390

moisturizers 120

Do you see what has happened:

The keyword "skin" got over 60 times as many searches as the bottom term, "moisturizers." That term may be one of your most valuable players.

When you check out your keywords on Overture you will also get with them words that won't be relevant. You will use those as negative keywords.

The masses of people who are looking for skin care products will use a large variety of search terms and phrases, more than the initial list we came up with. In order to be successful with managing your pay-per-click you will need to come up with more terms and then use the Overture tool again.

According to Overture, we could conceivably get tens, even hundreds of thousands of US searches in a month on those top keywords.
